On Monday, 26 February 2018, the Knesset approved in the first reading a bill that provides for preventing associations and institutions, which Israel considers to be active against the Israeli army, from implementing non-curricular activities at Israeli schools. MK Shuli Mualem of the Jewish Home party took the initiative to propose this bill.

The bill is applicable if those martyrs are from areas under the so-called “Israeli sovereignty”, including Jerusalem. However, such a bill immediately turns into a military regulation that is enforced to the West Bank.

After midnight on 30 January 2018, the Knesset Plenum approved in the first reading a bill, which provides for extending the powers of the Council for Higher Education in Israel to the occupied West Bank. Accordingly, instead of having its own ad hoc committee, the Ariel University at the Ariel settlement in the western Nablus governorate will report to the council. This is one of the annexation bills initiated by right wing MKs.

The Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies (MADAR) is an independent research centre specialising in Israeli affairs, based in Ramallah, Palestine. MADAR was established in 2000 by a group of Palestinian intellectuals and academics, including the late poet Mahmoud Darwish, Dr. Lily Feidy, Dr. Ali Jarbawi, Dr. Ahmad Harb, Mr. Walid Al-Ahmad and Mr. Akram Haniyyeh. The centre was registered as a not-for-profit organisation with the Palestinian Ministry of Interior, and obtained a research centre’s operational licensing from the Palestinian Ministry of Information.
