This issue of the Newsletter covers the period 08-11 February 2018. On Saturday, Israeli social media networks were preoccupied with the security escalation on Israel’s northern front. Just before Saturday noon, Israel launched airstrikes on several locations in Syria. The Syrian army shot down an Israeli F-16 fighter jet, leaving the crew with injuries. Prior to the attack on Syria, the Israeli air force brought down a reportedly Iranian reconnaissance plane, which had crossed Israel’s airspace. This issue of the Newsletter covers the period 5-7 February 2018. Israeli social media networks were taken up by several issues. Mainly, Israeli social media activists were occupied by the operation carried out by 19-year-old Abdul Karim Assi. According to the Israeli police, Assi stabbed and killed rabbi Itamar Ben-Gal in the vicinity of the Ariel settlement. Assi holds the Israeli nationality and lives in Tel Aviv. His mother is an Israeli Jew and his father a Palestinian from Nablus. Israeli social media platforms engaged in incitement against Assi’s family in particular, and against Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank in general.

MADAR CENTER

The Palestinian Forum for Israeli Studies (MADAR) is an independent research centre specialising in Israeli affairs, based in Ramallah, Palestine. MADAR was established in 2000 by a group of Palestinian intellectuals and academics, including the late poet Mahmoud Darwish, Dr. Lily Feidy, Dr. Ali Jarbawi, Dr. Ahmad Harb, Mr. Walid Al-Ahmad and Mr. Akram Haniyyeh. The centre was registered as a not-for-profit organisation with the Palestinian Ministry of Interior, and obtained a research centre’s operational licensing from the Palestinian Ministry of Information.
